As a hub community, Fort St John plays a major role in the infrastructure of northeast British Columbia. Over 61,000 people live and work in the trade area within the communities of Fort St John, Dawson Creek, Taylor, Chetwynd, Hudson Hope, Tumbler Ridge, Fort Nelson plus surrounding rural areas. Over the past three census data summaries, the population in the area indicates; 60,082 (2011) to 62,942 (2016) to 61,532 (2021).

According to census information, the city of Fort St John population center in 2016 of 20,026 increased to 21,123 in 2021. This represents a land area size of 32.67 square kilometers (approximately 8,073 acres), an increase from 14.89 square kilometers with the lands incorporated over the past 10 + years. These additional lands were incorporated as part of the City’s long term plans for anticipated growth over the next 50 years and includes a mix of residential, commercial and industrial development opportunities.

Fort St John’s economy is driven by the energy sector, power, forestry and agriculture.

Northern Health operates the Fort St John Regional Hospital and Residential Care Facility. The $300+ million dollar complex opened in June 2021 and continues to grow with the additions to equipment to meet the needs of the area.

North Peace Regional Airport, located only minutes from Fort St John’s city center, delivers corporate, industrial and personal air travel with services provided from independent helicopter service, private air lines and commercial jet services.
